Carpal Tunnel Release at Rockford Ambulatory Surgery Center (RASC)

Dealing with constant tingling, numbness, or pain in your hand and fingers can be frustrating. Often, these symptoms point to a common condition known as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This condition occurs when the median nerve, which runs from your forearm into the palm of your hand, becomes pressed or squeezed at the wrist. At Rockford Ambulatory Surgery Center, we partner with your personal physician to perform Carpal Tunnel Release, a straightforward outpatient procedure that can provide significant relief.

Understanding Carpal Tunnel Release and the Procedure

PURPOSE OF SURGERY

Carpal Tunnel Release surgery aims to relieve the pressure on the median nerve in the wrist, which is responsible for symptoms of pain, numbness, and weakness in the hand.

SURGICAL METHOD

The procedure involves severing the transverse carpal ligament to reduce the constriction on the median nerve, thereby easing symptoms.

ANESTHESIA AND RECOVERY

Performed under local anesthesia, sedation or general anesthesia this surgery allows you to remain awake without feeling pain, and it boasts a high success rate with typically quick postoperative recovery.

AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Smooth and Swift Recovery

Before your procedure, you'll meet with your doctor to discuss the details of the surgery and undergo a pre-operative evaluation to ensure the best approach for your condition. Your doctor will coordinate with our team at RASC to schedule your surgery. We'll provide you with instructions on how to prepare, including any adjustments to your medications and what time to stop eating and drinking the night before. Also, you'll need to arrange for someone to drive you home and stay with you overnight after the procedure.

On the day of your surgery, you can expect to be in and out of the surgery center on the same day. Your own doctor, supported by our experienced RASC surgical team, will perform the Carpal Tunnel Release. The procedure typically takes less than an hour, and you'll be able to rest in the comfort of your home shortly after.

Post-surgery, you'll likely experience immediate relief from the numbness and tingling. Any discomfort or swelling can be managed with medication and wrist supports. We'll give you detailed aftercare instructions and your doctor will arrange follow-up visits to monitor your healing process and removal of any stitches. You might be advised to limit the use of your hand for a short period and may benefit from physical therapy exercises to regain strength and flexibility.
